He played a crucial role in promoting peace and advocating for human dignity through his work at the United Nations and later during his retirement. Annan, a Ghanaian national, was the exemplar of a global African: firmly committed to his Kumasi roots while building a new narrative about Africa’s importance and influence on the international stage. Even as we mourn his passing, we celebrate his legacy. . . . #kofiannan #rip

Make the most of it and visit winter Lips Boutique Dress Sugar Casual 46qdgdTRw exhibition @madmuseum - an exploration of safe destinations for Black American travelers. ・・・ In partnership with MAD, we’re thrilled to offer free entry to our followers - simply share the code TAC2018 at the MAD admissions desk. ・・・ #Repost @madmuseum with @get_repost ・・・ 'Derrick Adams: Sanctuary' consists of 50 works of mixed-media collage, assemblage on wood panels, and sculpture presented in an installation designed by the artist Derrick Adams ( winter Lips Boutique Dress Sugar Casual 46qdgdTRw ) that reimagines safe destinations for the black American traveler during the mid-twentieth century. The body of work was inspired by 'The Negro Motorist Green Book,' an annual guidebook for black American road-trippers published by New York postal worker Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1967, during the Jim Crow era in America. Referred to simply as 'The Green Book' in its day, the publication served as a guide to finding businesses that were welcoming to black Americans, including hotels and restaurants, during an era when open and often legally prescribed discrimination against nonwhites was widespread. . . . 'Derrick Adams: Sanctuary' is on view through August 12. #derrickadamssanctuary

The large white building in the background is Fort Coenraadsburg, built to fend off attacks on Elmina castle. The castle was built by Portuguese colonizers in 1482 as a post for trading slaves, gold, and ivory. Today it is a @unesco world heritage site and welcomes visitors from around the world. 🇬🇭 . . . #ghana #ghanaindependence #elmina #independence #africa #africanhistory

Freedman Plaza in New York on Tuesday 7th March 2018 - October 2018. This new sculpture by Yinka Shonibare is created from fibreglass and covered in an intricate pattern. The 23-foot-tall sculpture will rise above the plaza, reminiscent of the untethered sail of a ship billowing in the breeze. Its unique, hand-painted pattern in turquoise, red and orange - colours that the artist associates with his childhood on the beaches of Lagos - is inspired by Dutch wax printed textiles, which Shonibare has called “the perfect metaphor for multilayered identities”. This is the first work in a second generation of his celebrated Wind Sculpture series and continues Shonibare’s ongoing examination of the construction of cultural identity through the lens of colonialism. The form of Wind Sculpture (SG) I suggests the movement of wind and natural elements rendered three-dimensionally through fabric, but also the sail of a ship, which for centuries was the only means of traversing oceans to exchange culture and ideas. The patterns on the surface are borrowed from vibrant batik textiles, which Shonibare has utilized in many forms and mediums and are often associated with European colonization of West Africa. However, these fabrics have a complicated history and came to the African continent by way of Indonesia through Dutch colonization in the 1800s. Today, these fabrics are still manufactured in the Netherlands, and sold and worn throughout West Africa. With Wind Sculpture (SG) I, Shonibare uses fabric as an entry point to rethink history and meaning and the relationship between Europe and Africa; it presents a story of shifting design and culture that also speaks to the confluence of many identities in public spaces.
